With all of the news about Hurricane Florence, your students may have a lot of questions about severe storms and weather. Talk about which kinds of storms may affect your area. Then have your students start a weather journal. You can find a free printable journal from the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks HERE.  The lesson plan with the journal indicates its for grades 5-8, but the printed journal itself can be used for elementary students as well.

This journal also includes a small section called Chester Noongwook’s Rules of Weather Observations. These tips come from one of the elders from a Yupik community on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. If time allows, use this page as a starting point for finding out how other communities monitor the weather without scientific instruments.
