This weekend, find out just what kind of trees are growing in your yard and around your house.
- First, create a “map” of your yard, indicating where each tree is located.
- Next, gather small sandwich baggies to collect several leaves from each tree. Number each baggie with a black sharpie.
- Now it’s time to head outside! Take along your map and a pencil. Walk from tree to tree, placing the leaves from just one tree in each numbered baggie. As you go, write down the number of the baggie next to the corresponding tree on the map.
- Finally, take out the leaves from one baggie at a time. Use a tree field guide or a website such as THIS ONE to identify each tree.
